Digital Media Strategist, Immigrant Defense Project

The Immigrant Defense Project (IDP) is a New York City-based nonprofit that works to secure
fairness and justice for all immigrants by transforming the racially-biased U.S. criminal and
immigration systems. IDP was founded twenty years ago to address the crisis of escalating
criminalization and mass deportation, and our work attacks the injustices at the intersection of
the criminal and immigration systems via a multi-pronged strategy. We strengthen immigrant
defense through training and expert advice, challenge unfair laws through impact litigation,
shape just policies through advocacy, work alongside communities and advocates through
alliance building and education, and challenge negative narratives about immigrants through
strategic communications.

Responsibilities:

  • Track and analyze trends in immigrants rights and criminal justice reform on social
  • media to develop recommendations that improve IDP’s overall social media presence
  • Work with leadership team on strategy development to grow IDP’s audiences
  • Work with staff across programs to draft content for major campaigns and events and
  • coordinate approvals process before scheduling
  • Create and maintain a social media calendar for IDP’s three platforms
  • Initiate new ideas for social media content, particularly for Twitter and Instagram
  • Conceptualize, develop and execute graphics for posting across platforms, both for
  • campaigns & rapid response
  • Attend 1-2 Communications team meetings a week (1 hr each)

Qualifications:

  • At least 2-3 years managing and producing social content in movement spaces
  • Ability to think strategically about audience engagement and growth
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Facility with design programs (e.g. Canva)
  • Experience in the movements for immigrants rights and/or criminal justice reform a plus
  • Commitment to IDP’s mission of fighting for fairness and justice for all immigrants caught
  • at the intersection of the racially biased U.S. criminal and immigration systems
  • Ability to collaborate and work respectfully with others
  • Fluency in Spanish a plus
