Paralegal, Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center

 
Position:
 
Our Detained Deportation Defense Program is integral to our mission and to the reality of our border city. The Paralegal will provide essential legal and administrative support to the Detained Team, who currently services persons detained in the El Paso Processing Center, Otero County Processing Center, Torrance County Detention Facility, and Cibola County Detention Facility. The Paralegal will work closely with the Director of Legal Services and Staff Attorneys to provide essential legal services to detained persons, the majority of whom are fleeing violence and persecution.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Manage all requests for detention center visits by entering in database and assisting team in assigning intake requests to volunteers and pro-bono attorneys.
  • Ensure volunteers follow all appropriate administrative protocols to upload intake, notes, and additional information onto Airtable and MyCase.
  • Assist Volunteer Coordinator in onboarding of volunteers for the team.
  • Engage in empowerment initiatives to provide additional means to help the detained population understand better how to navigate the detention system, more information sharing about their rights in detention.
  • Engage with community leaders and scholars to see how empowerment initiatives can be better tracked and be more inclusive for vulnerable populations.
  • Attend all staff meetings and case management meetings.
  • Work closely with the Director of Legal Services on policy initiatives, this includes drafting policy and informational statements that articulately lay out the current policy problems faced in our work, potential solutions, and desired outcomes.
  • Provide any necessary case support as needed by the Director of Legal
  • Services, this includes administrative duties, collecting evidence and following up with clients.
  • This position reports directly to the Director of Legal Services
