Contact with the criminal legal system can create unique risks and complications for an immigrant client. Immigration practitioners may have situations where they represent an immigrant who separately has an open criminal case in New York City and may not feel comfortable advising criminal defense counsel on how to resolve it This training is intended to provide information for attorneys, DOJ accredited representatives, and their support staff on the obligations of criminal defense counsel to advise immigrant clients on immigration consequences of their case, the overview of Padilla units that advise defense attorneys, and the path of a criminal case in New York City. Additionally, this training will provide information on the documents that are produced as part of a criminal case that may be necessary for immigration advocates to review.
