Strike! Supporting the Resistance in Detention

Topics:
  • Detention

In April, hundreds of people detained at Northwest Detention Center launched a hunger strike that lasted more than five weeks. Soon after its launch, ICE and GEO retaliated by transferring people to NORCOR in Oregon. Despite retaliation, the strike kept going and resistance grew, both inside and outside. Last week, the #Adelanto9 launched a hunger strike in California. That same morning, ICE/GEO retaliated against strikers, by violently assaulting them, including with pepper spray and even knocking out one of the strikers’ dental crowns. Again, resistance is growing both inside and outside, including 33 women who joined the strike in Adelanto.
These leaders haven’t been alone. Alongside their fight, have been folks on the outside organizing and maintaining strong support. From regular communication with leaders inside, to daily rallies showing visible support, the resistance outside has been growing and needs to continue to grow. Join our webinar on Thursday to hear directly about the work to support resistance inside. We’ll hear from leaders of NWDC Resistance, the Rural Organizing Project & Gorge ICE Resistance and Sureñxs en Acción.
