This free seminar will provide hands-on immigration court training to a small group of pro bono representatives emphasizing practice, procedure, and advocacy skills, in order to improve the quality of representation before the Los Angeles Immigration Court. The seminar consists of a substantive training in the morning, and a simulated hearing in the afternoon, during which participants will have an opportunity to serve in the role of Respondent’s Counsel for a portion of the hearing. Time to prepare for these roles will be allocated in the morning session. Sample case scenarios will be provided in advance of the seminar. This training is designed for attorneys with little or no immigration law experience. Participants must accept a new pro bono case from Esperanza Immigrant Rights Project within six months. The case will have been screened for asylum or SIJS eligibility. The case need not be completed within six months.
