Four years ago this month, Arizona’s infamous anti-immigrant law (SB 1070), was signed into law by Governor Jan Brewer. The U.S. Supreme Court struck down most of SB 1070 on constitutional grounds, placing significant limitations on local immigration enforcement. However, Arizona-like policies such as H.R. 2278, the so-called Strengthen and Fortify Enforcement (SAFE) Act, continue to be a part of the immigration reform debate in Congress. At this briefing, experts will speak about the legal, policy, and political drawbacks of the SAFE Act, including the serious public safety challenges they present for impacted communities.
