The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) reauthorized in March 2013 significantly expands the rights and protections of survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking in regard to subsidized housing. This training will review the protections of VAWA 2005 that remain in effect, describe the expanded protections added in March 2013 for survivors when they apply for or live in housing funded by HUD, Rural Development (USDA) and Low Income Housing Tax Credits (IRS/Section 42), and review recent VAWA litigation. Advocates will learn how to advise their clients if VAWA covers the survivor's situation and will learn what other protections may be available if the housing is not covered by VAWA. Well-informed advocates are key to making the protections of VAWA a reality for our clients who want to get or keep affordable housing.

Trainers:
Dorinda L. Wider, Staff Attorney, Mid Minnesota Legal Aid
Christy Snow-Kaster, Managing Attorney, Central Minnesota Legal Services

1.50 hours of Standard MN CLE credit will be applied for.
