SUMMARY:CGRS MCLE Webinar: Asylum and Climate Change: Fact
 ual Development in Climate-Related Claims
LOCATION:
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Center for Gender and Refugee
Studies (CGRS) for a webinar exploring the interse
ction of climate-related displacement and the U.S.
  asylum framework.

 An estimated 90% of the
world's refugees come from the countries most vuln
erable to, and least prepared for, the impacts of
climate change. The UN Refugee Agency—and even the
U.S. government—have both recognized that people
fleeing harms in the context of climate change may
have valid claims for asylum. But how do you elic
it relevant facts to ensure protection for individ
uals displaced in the context of the climate emerg
ency? What types of questions do you ask when scre
 ening for climate-related harms?

 Factual de
velopment is essential to develop any claim for as
ylum. But the process can be more difficult and ti
me intensive than many advocates expect. This is e
 specially true for climate-related claims.

Using real-world examples from Haiti to elucidate
how climate-related factors may interact with othe
r forms of persecution, this webinar will focus on
how to identify and analyze U.S. asylum claims in
volving climate change and environmental disasters
, including rapid- and slower-onset climate events
, and how to elicit and incorporate critical facts
  to support such claims.

 Attendees are enco
uraged to submit questions in advance via the regi
stration form, and also during live Q&A.
