SUMMARY:Fall 2025 Community Defender Skills Intensive: Con
ducting an Intake in a Detention Crisis
LOCATION:
DESCRIPTION:As immigrant communities grapple with more of
their members being detained, community defenders
are increasingly called upon to conduct intakes an
d triage cases, as well as provide critical legal
information to those detained. Join the National I
mmigration Project on October 10 for a community d
efender skills intensive designed to hone particip
ants’ abilities to interview in difficult circumst
ances, identify legal issues, and inform people of
their rights and the resources available to them.
Using the framework of the intake interview, we w
ill cover: why certain intake questions are critic
al; how to identify cases for potential legal assi
stance; detained immigrants’ rights; and recent de
velopments in immigration law and policy that affe
 ct detention and enforcement.

This training
is reserved for National Immigration Project membe
rs, past participants from our Removal Defense for
Community Defenders course, participants from our
Southeast, Midwest, or Rockies rapid response hub
s, and other close partners. Due to a limited numb
er of spots available, we ask that you complete th
is registration request form to tell us which grou
p you are a part of and that no more than two peop
le sign up from each organization.

We will r
eview registration requests on a rolling basis.

There will be Spanish simultaneous interpretat
 ion during this training.
