Ethical Issues in Limited Scope Representation and Pro Se Models: Practical Guidance for Program Leaders and Legal Practitioners

Topics:
  • Program Assistance

The demand for affordable immigration legal services continues to outweigh capacity, particularly with cuts to funding and the requisite downsizing in staff. Nonprofit providers have therefore increasingly turned to limited-scope service models to balance the desire to meet the community need without overburdening individual practitioners' caseloads. Pro se assistance, group workshops, and limited document assistance have all become ubiquitous in the face of these increasing demands. On the other hand, in the face of a hostile immigration environment, the risks of errors are greater than ever.
