The events of the past year have taught us that any progress on racial justice requires an ongoing commitment-not only to addressing the issues, but to understanding multiple perspectives. Nondiscrimination is a core principle of human rights and a commitment to racial justice underpins all our programming at The Advocates for Human Rights. This year, our Human Rights Book Club will focus on racial justice in the United States. We have selected four important books for the series and look forward to thought-provoking discussions and new ideas for advocacy. The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander

Michelle Alexander challenges the idea that civil rights reforms and increased political representation for African Americans has led to the end of widespread, systematic racism in the United States. Instead, she reveals how systems of oppression have shifted to less explicit methods of over-policing and mass incarceration within communities of color. These methods serve as the modern Jim Crow to maintain racial control and continue to deny the civil rights of those communities and, most predominantly, the African American men within them.
