Criminal system reform is on the forefront of many people’s minds, but how will recent U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) decisions and state legislative changes impact clients with criminal convictions? Speakers will first discuss the future of the modified categorical approach after the Supreme Court’s decision in Pereida v. Wilkinson. They will address how the BIA’s Matter of Velasquez-Rios decision impacts states’ ability to limit immigration consequences of criminal convictions through legislative reform. The panelists welcome questions from practitioners, as well as hearing about experiences from attorneys around the country as these issues develop.
