Description:

Each day, thousands of immigrants are detained, ordered deported, and denied rights under current laws because they cannot meaningfully engage with our broken immigration legal system. Heightened, overly-agressive enforcement and anti-immigrant policies in Washington have only exacerbated these threats to our communities. To respond to this crisis, New York has led other states in providing publicly-funded legal representation to immigrants and fostering programs meant to support their legal needs, all with the aspiration of one day achieving universal representation.

As we continue to look for ways to protect immigrant New Yorkers in meaningful, sustainable ways, this teach-in is aimed at starting a dialogue on what constitutes universal representation. What do we mean when we say we are working towards Universal Representation? What are the legal needs our communities face? And what are the challenges providers face in meeting them?

The goal is to walk away with a better understanding of the different views on universal representation and ideas on how to address the challenges communities face in accessing legal help when in need.

Dinner will be provided.
