During this in-person training, participants will learn effective trial strategies for litigating defensive claims involving asylum, withholding of removal, and protection under the Convention Against Torture in the United States. The training will begin with the substantive law in fear-of-return cases. An overview of the fundamental practical skills for working with asylum seekers, including eliminating bias, interviewing skills, and writing a compelling declaration will be discussed. A mock trial will be a component of the training. Legal representatives new to representing clients in defensive asylum proceedings as well as seasoned advocates seeking further skills' development are welcome to attend.
