40 Hour Overview of Immigration Law: Albany

The NYIC's 40 hour training provides a comprehensive overview of immigration law. This training is aimed at individuals seeking partial DOJ accreditation, which allows individuals to represent clients before DHS under certain circumstances. The training will cover the below topics, and will include a conversation with USCIS officers.

  • Foundations in Immigration Law
  • Family-Based Immigration
  • Adjustment of Status and Consular Processing
  • Concepts of Inadmissibility and Deportability
  • Naturalization and Citizenship
  • Fee Waivers
  • Asylum
  • Special Immigrant Juvenile Status
  • VAWA
  • U and T Non-immigrant Status
  • Immigration Consequences of Criminal Activity
  • Ethics and Immigration Fraud
  • Client Interviewing

Approximately 26 CLE credits will be awarded.

Who can attend?

In order to effectively increase capacity to serve New York State's immigrant community and to combat fraud, participants must demonstrate they meet certain eligibility criteria. These criteria are as follows:

  • Non-profit staff/volunteer, private attorney, or government employee
  • Based in New York State

Please note that because of high demand and limited space, registration will be capped at two participants per organization. Any additional applicants will be added to a wait list and notified in the event that space becomes available.

Priority will be given to non-attorney staff from non-profits seeking DOJ accreditation.

Fees

Price is per participant

  • NYIC Members: FREE for ONA Sponsored Trainings!
  • Non-NYIC Member Organizations: FREE for ONA Sponsored Trainings!
  • Private Attorneys: $1,250
  • Government Employees: $500

Participants are responsible for all expenses associated with travel, accommodation and meals.

Application Process

Interested persons must first complete an application. Applicants must also provide the following documents to confirm eligibility.

Non-profit staff/volunteers:

  • Letter from supervisor to confirm employment at the stated organization
  • Proof of 501(c)(3) status
  • Non-attorneys must also provide a letter of attestation signed by their supervisor

Private Attorneys:

  • Attorney registration number

Government Employees:

  • Letter from supervisor to confirm employment at the stated organization
  • Non-attorneys must also provide a letter of attestation signed by their supervisor

You will then be notified if you are accepted and can proceed with the registration process.

Timeline

Applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis until Friday, August 24th or until capacity is reached.

Please note that this training is only open to organizations and attorneys based in New York State.
