As the Trump Administration is trying to embed immigration enforcement into local policing, it has used the expansion of the 287(g) program – a program to deputize local law enforcement agents to act as immigration authorities at local expense, entrenching the jail to deportation pipeline - as one primary tool. It has already increased 287(g) agreements in localities from 30 counties to more than 60, with two dozen more in the pipeline. However, there strategies to fight 287(g) agreements, both to pressure localities to not enter into them or to get localities back out or terminate the agreement. This webinar will provide essential background and context on the 287(g) program and how it works, share local campaign successes and challenges in Los Angeles, Houston, Phoenix, and New Jersey, and share organizing, legal, and policy strategies for fighting 287(g) contracts at the local level.
