Presenters Ms. Petrasek and Mr. Cushman will be discussing ways to evaluate the child client’s capacity as well as how to best work with a child client. The presenters will talk about different child-friendly interviewing techniques and give tips on building trust with the child client. They will give guidance on the child’s participation in court hearings and speak directly to the different specific tasks listed for the child’s attorney as outlined in the ABA Model Guidelines for Working with Children in Immigration Hearings. This section of the CLE will also include a discussion on the attorney’s role and duties versus the guardian ad litem’s role and duties. This portion of the CLE is designed to be interactive and attendees are encouraged to participate in the discussions.
