Dismantling an Inhumane and Deadly Detention System

Topics:
  • Detention

Unsafe conditions, abuse and medical neglect plague the United States immigration detention system. Often, these abusive conditions lead to deaths – including 174 people who have died in ICE custody since 2003. With current efforts to expand the already deadly system under DHS, our communities and families are increasingly at risk of facing inhumane detention conditions and deportation practices. Earlier this year, Project South and Penn State Law Center for Immigrants' Rights Clinic released the "Imprisoned Justice: Inside Two Georgia Detention Facilities" report, further exposing the particular conditions of these facilities in the Southeast. DWN members, Georgia Detention Watch and Congress of Day Laborers, along with Project South, will be hosting a presentation and discussion to learn about the work being done in Georgia and Louisiana to track detention conditions, develop leadership of people most directly-affected and strategies employed in the fight to end detention, including efforts of the ongoing campaign to #DefundHate.
