Immigrants are frequently victimized by notarios who promise to get them legal status or huge tax refunds. These notarios claim to be licensed to practice immigration law and charge immigrants huge fees for fraudulent work. If they also prepare taxes, they may falsify tax returns to boost refunds and fees. However, notario fraud could lead to deportation or IRS tax debt for the immigrant, while the notario runs off with their money. This CLE will cover how notario fraud happens in our community, the consequences of tax preparer fraud, the consumer and tax law remedies available for victims, and how attorneys can prevent this fraud from happening.
