  • Eastern Time (US & Canada)
  • By: Immigrant Legal Resource Center, Catholic Charities of Atlanta, the Latin American Association and the New Americans Campaign
  • One Atlantic Conference Center
Topics:
  • Citizenship
  • Naturalization

This training will begin with a review of the general requirements for naturalization including continuous residence, physical presence, good moral character, the English and Civics requirements, and the red flag issues that can cause an applicant to be denied or even deported. During the good moral character discussions, we will delve into the reasons why some naturalization applicants could be deportable, as well as how failure to register for the selective service, failure to pay child support, failure to file income taxes, and other issues can affect naturalization applications. We will review the impact that absences can have on naturalization eligibility, including continuous residence, physical presence, and abandonment issues, as well as tips on how to file a Freedom of Information Act request. We hope to conclude with a discussion with the USCIS naturalization and citizenship liaison. This training is free for participating staff from nonprofit organizations working on naturalization and citizenship issues.  All participants will receive a free electronic version of the ILRC’s top-selling manual, Naturalization and U.S. Citizenship: The Essential Legal Guide, 14th Edition.
