This fundamental-level CLE is designed to provide volunteer attorneys with the skills needed to represent clients through the naturalization process in front of Department Homeland Security-USCIS. The first hour will focus on the basics of naturalization law, including who is eligible to file and what possible issues need to be spotted. The second hour will focus on the process itself and how to avoid “going off track.” Specifics include how and when to fill out the application, waivers (health and others), residency issues, criminal issues, taxes and other hurdles to watch out for. The CLE will be held in conjunction with the John A. Meehan Institute and Jewish Family and Children's Services. Upon completion of the CLE the volunteer attorneys will be asked to work with a client and take their case from initial intake to the citizenship ceremony.
