The Legal Aid Justice Center and a coalition of immigrant rights groups will host an information session for service providers on the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that left in place a lower court injunction blocking the Obama administration's administrative relief programs Deferred Action for the Parents of U.S. Citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) and Extended Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (Extended DACA). Both programs would have allowed millions of aspiring Americans to come out of the shadows and live and work in support of their families and communities. It is important to note that in making the decision, the Court did not rule on the constitutionality of the programs themselves but instead voted in a 4-4 tie that in effect left in place a lower court ruling blocking the programs. Participants in the information session will be provided with more information on the Court's decision and its implications as well as how best to speak with members of immigrant communities confused about the current status of DAPA and Extended DACA. The Court's decision has resulted in huge uncertainty and insecurity for the immigrant communities in Virginia especially in this turbulent election cycle and the announcement of immigration raids by the Obama administration. Service Providers have direct links to the broader community and it will be important for them to have accurate information to better inform the public as well as protect immigrants from unscrupulous individuals seeking to profit from the confusion such as those engaged in notary fraud.
