Some U.S. citizens have to fight to be recognized as such; even obtaining a copy of one’s U.S. birth certificate can be problematic. Often, the battles over procuring documents of citizenship are with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the U.S. Department of State (DOS). This advanced-level seminar will address the problems often faced by clients who find themselves having to prove their U.S. citizenship, whether they were born in the United States or abroad.

• Holly S. Cooper (DL), Davis, CA
  Holly S. Cooper has extensive litigation experience defending the rights of immigrants and is a nationally recognized expert on immigration detention issues and on the immigration consequences of criminal convictions. After law school, Ms. Cooper worked for Reed Smith LLP (formerly Crosby, Heafey Roach & May LLP), The Law Offices of Fellom & Solorio, and the Florence Immigrant & Refugee Rights Project. As the senior staff attorney at the Florence Project, Ms. Cooper initiated the Detained Immigrant Children's Rights Project, provided representation and pro se assistance for adult detainees, and mentored pro bono attorneys. Ms. Cooper joined the UC Davis law faculty in 2006 and is currently the associate director of the Immigration Law Clinic where she focuses on advocating for the rights of detained immigrants. In 2011, she was the recipient of the King Hall Legal Foundation's Outstanding Alumni Award and the Carol Weiss King award from the National Lawyers Guild.
• Ofelia L. Calderón, Fairfax, VA
  Ofelia L. Calderón is a partner at Calderón Seguin PLC in Fairfax, VA. In addition to a diverse practice which includes family, naturalization, business, and asylum, Ms. Calderón concentrates on federal matters and removal cases. She is an Advisory Council member for Legal Aid Justice Center, and a long standing member of AILA, the National Immigration Project, CAIR Coalition, and the Hispanic Bar Association of Virginia. She served as the chair of the liaison committee to the Executive Office for Immigration Review in Arlington, VA for the Washington D.C. AILA Chapter for more than five years.
• Grace Ruth Kennedy, Atlanta, GA
  Grace Ruth Kennedy holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the National University of Ireland, Dublin and a Master of Laws Degree from Emory University School of Law. She has extensive experience in immigration related adoption issues, family immigration, bonds, removal defense and international business. Ms. Kennedy is one of a few attorneys in the United States who routinely handles complex adoption issues involving orphans from predominantly Muslim countries, including Pakistan and Afghanistan. Ms. Kennedy has assisted numerous families who have received a Notice of Intent to Deny or a Denial to obtain visas for their adopted children. She specializes in remedial work on previously denied cases. Ms. Kennedy routinely represents individuals and families before the Immigration Judge, USCIS and the Board of Immigration Appeals in connection adjustment of status, I-140 petitions, cancellation of removal, and asylum cases. Ms. Kennedy also assists employers, investors and businesses with E, H, L, O, P and TN visas.
