This event will be a briefing and roundtable discussion on new legal actions brought against the US government in the international arena to challenge law enforcement abuse and impunity in border communities. This event will take place with the family of Anastasio Hernandez Rojas, who died after being brutally tased and beaten by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents in San Diego in 2010. Since that time, CBP agents and officers have been involved in incidents resulting in at least 46 deaths, including the deaths of several minors, and no agent or officer has been held accountable. Given ongoing impunity in this case, UC Berkeley’s International Human Rights Law Clinic and members of the Southern Border Communities Coalition are representing the family of Mr. Hernandez Rojas in their human rights litigation against the U.S. government before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). The case addresses U.S. agencies’ failure to investigate and hold these federal law enforcement agents accountable, litigation that could help elevate and advance broader calls for law enforcement reform and accountability. Anastasio Hernandez Rojas’ brother and daughter will be in Washington, D.C. to submit their case for consideration by the IACHR and will be present for the discussion. They will be joined by the attorneys representing the family in their case before the Inter-American system, Roxanna Altholz, Associate Director at UC Berkeley - International Human Rights Law Clinic, and Andrea Guerrero, Executive Director of Alliance San Diego and Co-Chair of the Southern Border Communities Coalition.
