Immigration Detention: Improving Conditions and Getting People Out

Topics:
  • Detention

Immigrant detainees in the South face some of the worst conditions of confinement and the highest denial rates for immigration relief in the United States. For example, Detainees at Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia have faced retaliatory force and a facility-wide lockdown after protesting conditions. As the Guardian has reported, these detainees face “inedible, worm-ridden food; medical neglect to the point where detainees have died from treatable infections; little or no outdoor recreation; overuse of solitary confinement on mentally ill detainees; and no contact visits with loved ones.” Immigrant detainees desperately need pro bono help: only 6 percent of immigrant detainees at Stewart Detention Center have representation. Chances for relief increase dramatically if individuals are able to bond out from detention, and find representation. This CLE workshop will provide training to pro bono attorneys on assisting immigrant detainees with obtaining bond; filing habeas petitions for detainees subject to unconstitutionally lengthy detention; and participating in a national survey project to document and improve conditions of confinement at immigration detention facilities.
