After the Election: Policies Affecting Young Children of Immigrants

Topics:
  • Family
  • Immigrant Children

Shortly before the second inauguration of Barack Obama as President of the United States, the Migration Policy Institute (MPI)'s National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy will convene a public policy research symposium focused on young children of immigrants in the United States. The conference will frame the major policy and practice issues affecting children (birth through age 10) with immigrant parents and reflect broadly on the political climate for policy change. The event will feature speakers who link research-based understanding to three critical domains of policy key to child well-being: health, education, and immigration especially as it relates to unauthorized immigrants. We will conclude with a "Letter to the President" that outlines a nonpartisan, research-based policy agenda for the Obama administration. The symposium, which is supported by the Foundation for Child Development (FCD), will be held on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of FCD's Young Scholars Program - a landmark program in the encouragement and support of scholarly research on young children of immigrants.
