Gang violence and Asylum Law - Developing legal theories and strong records for asylum seekers fleeing violence by organized gangs: Organized, violent, gangs have severely restricted the freedom of movement and social engagement of families, youths and young women in countries with weak police and judicial protections. Gangs threaten young boys and girls with forcible recruitment, making it difficult for youth to pursue studies and employment opportunities in the face of threatened violence. Young women face being appropriated by gang members. Shop owners and transport workers face extortion. Victims fear to seek help from police. Society is profoundly impacted where gangs are able to exert shadow control over communities in defiance of the authorities. What legal theories have been advanced under asylum law for persons fleeing gang violence in their homelands?
