Legal Orientation Program Paralegal, CAIR Coalition


The Capital Area Immigrants' Rights Coalition (CAIR Coalition), a non-profit legal services organization, has an immediate opening for a paralegal to staff its Legal Orientation Program (LOP).

CAIR Coalition brings together community groups, pro bono attorneys, volunteers, and immigrants from the District of Columbia, Virginia and Maryland working to ensure that all immigrants are treated with fairness, dignity and respect for their human and civil rights. We also serve as the primary source of legal assistance for detained immigrants and asylum seekers in the Washington metropolitan area.


Job Duties and Responsibilities:

· Under supervision of LOP attorney, lead teams of volunteers on weekly visits to Virginia jails
· Assist LOP attorney with group legal orientations, individual consultations and workshops during each jail visit
· Work with LOP attorney to conduct research on specific cases, including reviewing immigration and criminal court records, communicating with family members and researching country conditions
· Manage logistics of jail visits, including scheduling, recruiting and training volunteers and preparing written materials for use during the visit.
· Maintain LOP and CAIR Coalition databases
· Prepare reports as needed
· Other duties as assigned


Qualifications:

Knowledge, skills and abilities: Must have strong organization and time management skills. Knowledge of immigration issues, particularly as they pertain to the detention setting, a plus. Spanish language skills required. Valid driver's license required.


Education:
Must have a college degree
