Legislative Intern, LIRS
Position Objective:
To assist in the daily activities of the office by advocating on behalf of refugees and immigrants on legislation that is consistent with LIRS's policy goals. In 2008, LIRS has concentrated on protecting immigrant children and families and ensuring that refugees and asylum seekers are able to receive protection and services in the United States.
Qualifications Include:
1. Commitment to LIRS's core mission and values and an ability to model those values in relationship with colleagues and partners; commitment to refugees and immigrants
2. Prior experience working with the immigrant or refugee community
3. Prior legislative or advocacy experience
4. Ability to multitask
5. Professionalism
6. Strong writing and analytical skills
7. Foreign language skills
Responsibilities Include:
1. Attend meetings on policy and legislation, and report back to the office.
2. Work with LIRS's networks and constituencies, mobilize grassroots and run small legislative campaigns.
3. Draft position statements, memos and other written materials.
4. Research and analyze legislation.
5. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Reporting Relationship:
The legislative intern reports to the assistant director and director for legislative affairs.
Supervisory Relationships:
The legislative intern does not currently supervise any other positions.
Salary and Terms:
The legislative intern will be based at LIRS's Legislative Affairs Office in Washington, D.C., and will receive a stipend to cover food, travel and other expenses. Ideally, the internship will start on September 2, 2008 and end on December 19, 2008, though the dates are negotiable.
