A Somali journalist, running for his life, came to the United States for safety and freedom. When he first arrived, however, he was interrogated and sent to a detention facility. While waiting for legal protection under international law, he is treated like a criminal. Despite being beaten and tortured in his home country for standing up against injustice, when he sought freedom on U.S. shores he was again terribly traumatized, kept from the light of day for months. The system is broken. But we can bring hope and welcome to people like this. LIRS is hosting an interactive webinar on detention visitation.
The webinar will cover:
- A clearer understanding of the latest issues
- Tips for a good visit and how to become a volunteer visitor
- Stories from experienced visitors
- Discussion time to ask questions and share best practices
- A first look at LIRS's new visitation resource, Bring the Sky
Anna Campbell from LIRS's Access to Justice department will host the webinar. She will be joined by Eli Hernandez who leads LIRS's engagement with churches and community groups.
