Responding to ICE Enforcement in the Northwest: How to Assist Immigrants Following An ICE Enforcement Action

This intensive one day training will cover current ICE enforcement mechanisms, including state and local law enforcement partnerships, detainers, detention policies and practices. It will also discuss procedures at the Tacoma Detention Center, bonds, motions to suppress evidence, discovery in immigration proceedings and ethics in immigration practice. The training materials will provide information on all aspects of immigration enforcement and sample pleadings on detainers and motions to suppress. The goal of the training is to educate attorneys and legalworkers representing clients detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and to provide information about the current status of immigration enforcement policies and practices.

The training will be presented by Susan Schreiber and Debbie Smith, CLINIC Attorneys in Chicago and San Francisco. Local speakers include Betsy Tao of Northwest Immigrants Rights Project, John Marandas and Chanpone Sinlapasi of John Marandas, P.C. and Philip Hornik, Law Office of Philip Hornik. An application for Oregon CLE credit, including one hour of ethics, is pending.

The training is intended for attorneys, Catholic Charities and other community-based organizations with IRS 501(c)(3) status staff with experience or interest in representing immigrants in removal proceedings.

Cost:

$50 per person for CLINIC affiliates and staff of 501(c)(3) non-profit programs;
$150 office location cap ($10 fee per person for more than 3 people from the same office address)

$75 per person for private attorneys and their staff

The registration fee includes training materials, continental breakfast, and lunch.
