This two-day course for new practitioners combines a basic overview of immigration law with an introduction to the legal skills critical to becoming an effective immigration law advocate. Topics covered include: immigrating through marriage and other family relationships; the application process for permanent residence; grounds of inadmissibility; affidavits of support; removal proceedings; citizenship and naturalization; and BIA recognition and accreditation. Participants will also learn about effective interviewing, doing legal research, case file management and ethical considerations in immigration law practice. The training will be presented by CLINIC attorneys Jennie Guilfoyle and Susan Schreiber.
The training is for the staff of Catholic Charities and other community-based organizations with IRS 501(c)(3) status, and attorneys and legal worker staff of private law offices. The training is intended for legal workers and lawyers new to immigration law practice. If you are registering as staff of a community-based organization, you must fax a copy of you IRS 501(c)(3) letter designating your agency as a nonprofit entity to CLINIC at 415-394-8696 to the attention of Chris Ozaki. Your registration will be confirmed upon receipt of this letter. If you are an attorney, please include your state bar number. Payment is by credit card only.
Note that this is a highly interactive training with several small group exercises included in the curriculum. Prior to the training, participants will receive an email with some short reading and worksheet assignments to be completed before the training starts. Participants will also have a homework assignment to complete for day two of the training.
Fee includes a copy of the training manual, and continental breakfast and lunch on both days.

$250 per person for staff of CLINIC affiliates; $750 cap
($65 materials and lunch per person for more than 3 attendees from same office site)
$275 per person for non-profit program staff; $825 cap
($65 materials and lunch fee per person for more than 3 attendees from same office site)
$405 per person for private attorneys and their staff
