Legal Remedies Under the Violence Against Women Act and U and T Visas for Victims of Crimes and Trafficking

This two-day immigration law training course will be presented by Attorneys Julia Alanen and Peggy Gleason. Local experts will also participate. Julia Alanen is the national VAWA project attorney for CLINIC. She conducts trainings across the U.S. on the subject of immigration law for victims of domestic violence. She also published and trained attorneys in this area while employed with the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Peggy Gleason is an attorney with CLINIC and Catholic Charities in Washington, D.C. who also practices in the area of immigration law for victims of domestic violence and crimes. She is a frequent trainer on immigration law for CLINIC and AILA. The course will cover the law and practice pointers for representing immigrants who are victims of domestic violence, crimes or trafficking. Trainers will describe self petition requirements under VAWA, processing with CIS, adjustment and waivers for VAWA, and VAWA cancellation. Trainers will also cover U and T nonimmigrant visa and adjustment requirements. Training methods are a mix of lecture and frequent interactive exercises, with use of case files to demonstrate application of the law.
Cost:
$220 per person for CLINIC affiliates; $660 office location cap ($50 fee per person for more than 3 attendees from same affiliate)
$245 per person for staff of 501(c)(3) non-profit programs; $735 office location cap ($50 fee per person for more than 3 attendees from same office)
$375 per person for private attorneys and their staff
Registration fee includes a copy of the training manual.
The training is for the staff of community-based organizations with IRS 501(c) (3) status, and attorneys and legal worker staff of private law offices. CLE applied for.
